Portland Defending Childhood is an initiative that seeks to prevent and address children’s exposure to violence through education, services, supports and treatment. PDC provides trainings for teachers and other professionals who work with families so that they understand their role in preventing and reducing the impact of exposure to violence on children, and also provides evidence-based, clinical treatments and supports to children and their caregivers.
Our programs and treatments work because they depend on a collaborative approach to solving health and social problems, and preventing conditions that put children at risk for poor outcomes. When we can reduce and buffer toxic stress reactions in our children by providing education, support and treatment, we are essentially putting in place a preventive system that catches kids before they fall.
